January curation

Welcome to Somm Selection January curation. Below you will find short notes or stories about your wines that have been delivered to your home. Here at, Somm Selection, we do things a little different. Rather than surprise you with your monthly curation, you can see exactly which wines I chose. Needless to say, you have amazing value for money wines but also, wines that have been tried and tested. Along with my fellow sommeliers, all of these wines are in the category ‘ you have to try this wine’.

Enjoy!

One for the Champagne Lovers

Complex, Profund and indulgent, the Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve has taken its time and does not care who knows it. The House bottles each give important information on ageing with the specific the year the wine was placed to age in the chalk cellars as well as the year it was disgorged.

TO THE EYE

The Brut Réserve boasts a deep golden hue. Delicate, vivacious and long-lasting bubbles are the result of a long, slow maturing process in chalk cellars.

ON THE NOSE

Thanks to 40% of reserve wines, the blend offers a complex, elegant, voluptuous nose with a touch of freshly baked brioche, rich toasted notes and sun-drenched fruits - mango, apricot and mirabelle plum - accented by dried fruits, pistachio and almond.

ON THE PALATE

The texture is reminiscent of a crisp layer of nougatine on a velvety cream pastry, filled with plump red plums and ripe cherries. The selection of reserve wines gives the wine lushness. The finish unveils notes of praline and vanilla.

This month curation as promised we go through classics. Whether it’s light a crispy for a sunny afternoon or delicious iconic Barossa shiraz. Something that is mature and with a little age and also young and vibrant. A journey through our part of the world with a little European touch.

Craggy Range

Snake+ Herring- 2021 ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ Pinot Gris + Gewürztraminer + Riesling (Great Southern)

The Bizarre Love Triangle is an idea, a blend based on the Gentil aromatic blends of Alsace in France, where it is allowed to blend only Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. These are aromatic-spicy delicious wines with slippery and slatey textures, great chilled for warm weather and approachable as young wines.

Patina Cabernet Merlot Patina is a family-owned estate nestled in the rich volcanic slopes of Mt Canobolas near Orange, New South Wales. Owner and winemaker, Gerald Naef, blends science and technology with an age-old tradition to create complex flavours forged by the elements of nature. His Patina Wine represents the complexity and elegance of cool climate wine defined by nature and his personal signature.

The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine nuances of black currant with good up-front palate intensity and a lingering tannin finish while Merlot rounds out the mid-palate and contributes dark fruit flavours. The Cabernet Franc contributes a lightly lifted floral note and a hint of sweet spice and plums.

An inviting ripe fruit palate up-front palate leads to a fruity mid-palate with hints of tobacco evolving to a very long back palate with a firm tannin finish.

Red Clow Pinot Noir Red Claw wines are handcrafted with fruit from Yabby Lake’s own vineyards. The wines are made following the same principles that guide the single-vineyard wines. With Red Claw, the emphasis is on making wines that are bright, juicy and more expressive when young – lending them perfectly to the Australian lifestyle and the way we like to dine.

Handpicked, with each parcel handled separately in the winery. Characteristic perfumed, fragrant aromas highlighted by cherry and red berry fruits, complemented by a touch of spice and underlying French oak. The long, silky palate has lovely elegance, a plush, velvety texture and a finely poised finish.

Frogmore Creek Pinot Noir

Yangarra Shiraz

Straight to red

When you just say no to anything that is white or too pale in colour I got you sorted. In the end, I work in NY inspired steak house- I do understand when you say a bottle of red.

In this curation, you will get a taste of extremely smooth and juicy Point to big and bold Syrah from McLaren Valey. Cannot miss the big-name Henschke. Fun fact, Christian Henschke, a founder of this most famous Australian wine family, came from Silesia, just a bit over a one hour drive from when I was born in Poland. Also, a great example of Tuscan wine, who doesn’t miss travelling?! If you are cooking Bistecca a’la Florentina (T- bone steak) you must try it with Vino mobile di Montepulciano.

Wine Connoisseur

It gives me a lot of pleasure to curate Wine Connoisseur, it’s exciting to find a good vintage (like Crawford River ‘05) or last available bottles (like Mont-Redon ‘06). This selection is all about ‘you must try this wine. Excellent wines for entertaining guests or sharing with someone who has a higher appreciation for wine. A great mix of Australian icons like Bannockburn S.R.H and the international oldest french appellation Chateauneuf du Pape. More in details:
